Near the market: a 19th-century inn that housed traders and their goods arriving by caravan from the African interior before shipping out with cloves and ivory. The deep arched gateway once admitted camels - today it opens onto a quieter courtyard.

CARVED DOOR
The gateway's carved stone arch frames a massive wooden door whose iron studs were hammered in from the inside - caravan-serai doors were built to be barred against the night, not to welcome it.
